Missed your shot at a Galaxy Z TriFold? A successor could be in the works with a new hinge

The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, an innovative foldable smartphone, has quickly become a limited-run product, selling out after a last-call sale earlier this month. As of April 17, the device is officially unavailable, with Samsung redirecting interested buyers to alternative models like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 or Galaxy S26 Ultra. Despite the short lifespan of the Galaxy Z TriFold, rumors are already circulating about a potential successor in the works.

Initially, there were indications that the Galaxy Z TriFold would be a one-time offering from Samsung. However, recent speculation suggests that the tech giant is indeed developing a second-generation model, likely dubbed the Galaxy Z TriFold 2. According to leaker Lanzuk (yeux1122), this new model could feature a redesigned hinge that aims to make the device thinner and lighter, addressing some of the criticisms leveled at its predecessor.

The Galaxy Z TriFold was notable for its substantial build, measuring 12.9mm thick and weighing 309 grams, a stark contrast to the more streamlined Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is just 8.9mm thick and weighs 215 grams. The significant differences in thickness and weight can be attributed to the Galaxy Z TriFold's dual-hinge mechanism and its larger 10-inch inner display. If the concept of 'TriFold' smartphones is to gain traction in the mainstream market, improvements in design, particularly around the hinge, will be essential.

Rumors suggest that Samsung's goal for the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 includes not only a complete redesign of the hinge but also enhancements that could be applied to other models in the Galaxy Z lineup. Reports indicate that a slightly modified hinge could be introduced in upcoming Galaxy Z Fold and Flip models, potentially making them lighter and thinner without the full overhaul seen in the Galaxy Z TriFold 2.

Though the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 remains unconfirmed, the ongoing discussions around its development signal a strong interest from both consumers and the company itself. The original Galaxy Z TriFold, with its high price and limited availability, garnered significant attention, indicating that there is a market for such devices despite their drawbacks. Samsung’s potential efforts to refine the hinge design could greatly enhance user experience, making foldable technology more accessible and desirable.

As we await further confirmation regarding the Galaxy Z TriFold 2, the focus remains on whether Samsung will deploy this entirely new hinge solution and how it will affect the overall structure and usability of the device. If the rumors hold true, the upcoming model could mark a significant step forward in the evolution of foldable smartphones, potentially setting a new standard in the industry.
